10 Quick But Very Queer Halloween Outfit Ideas For 2023

Halloween has long been dubbed the “gay Christmas” and just like at Christmas, there are those who are prepared long in advance and then there are those of us who are drastically searching Amazon on Christmas Eve.  If you’re in need of a last minute Halloween costume then check out our top 10 gay Halloween outfits for 2023 below.

  1. Barbenheimer // Alan or Weird Barbie, the ultimate Queer outcasts

Okay so there will probably be A LOT of Barbie inspired outfits this year but this one’s a fairly easy go to.  Mix your favourite pink and black wardrobe staples and you’re good to go.

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you could always take on an Alan or Weird Barbie inspired outfit.  Because let's face it, there are the Barbies and the Kens of the world, but no one quite embodies what it’s like to be an alternative queer growing up in a cis-het world quite like Weird Barbie or Alan.

  2. A League of Their Own: Lesbians resurrected

A league of their own characters

2022 brought us the amazing TV remake of A League of Their Own but sadly the show's co-creator and star, Abbi Jackobson, confirmed back in August that the much anticipated season 2 had been cancelled. Despite it adding to the pile of cancelled queer shows, the Rockford Peaches provide Halloween outfit inspiration for all walks of queer women and you’re sure to find something in your wardrobe that can be reworked. Some may call it lazy… others will admire your homage to this great show and creativity at bringing the characters back to life. Bonus marks for fake blood and other “resurrected” small touches.

  3. Bisexual Icon Nick Nelson from Heartstopper

One of the queer shows to make it through 2023 was the return of Heartstopper. Embrace the charm of Nick, Charlie or any of your other favourite Heartstopper characters by dressing in school uniform or just some regular clothes. To make the reference a little clearer you can add rainbow flag accessories or if you really want to make the reference clear and support a queer owned business, then this “I’m Bi actually” T-shirt is the perfect thing to wear (okay… we might be a little bias on that one. But you can’t blame us)

  4. Velma from Scooby-Doo

A series of cartoons showing Velma Dinkley's queer realisation from initial gay panic to proudly coming out

Celebrate Velma's coming out anniversary with a nod to her iconic style. Pair orange and red tones from your existing clothes, and add some vintage thick brim glasses if you can for the finishing touch. Velma's intelligence and confidence make her a beloved queer icon, so even if the clothing you have to hand isn’t 100% accurate, you can still sell this and pay tribute to her journey.

  5. The gayer, more evil gay person

Twitter response to the "behind every gay person is a gayer, more evil person" showing Billy and Stu from the 1996 film Scream

Throw it back to January 2023 when Anania Williams woke us all from our new year slumber with the now viral tweet “behind every gay person is a gayer, more evil gay person”. After posting on Twitter (or whatever it’s called now), the queers were quick to get involved sharing their favourite evil duos.  Whether you go as a true queer couple or just give nod to your favourite queer /horror icons, this one opens a world of possibilities & reminds everyone that queerness comes in all forms, even the delightfully evil ones.

  6. Lake Ripple

Lake Ripple from Elemental, the first non-binary character to appear in a Pixar film

After much fanfare and anticipation, the first ever nonbinary character to appear in a Pixar movie graced our screens this year, if only for a few seconds.  If you’re more of a quiet gay and don’t plan on staying at the party too long, then this could be the perfect satire attire to join and then make a hasty exit in.  Blue tones, some face paint and your favourite gender nonconforming clothing are all you’ll need.

  7. Any one of the 96 out LGBTQ+ players from the Women’s World Cup

The moment Ireland’s Rocha Littlejohn appeared to refuse to shake hands with Australia’s Caitlin Ford during the Ireland vs Australia game at the Women's World Cup 2023

In what can only be described as the remake of the L Word’s infamous chart, the Women’s World Cup had the queer women of TikTok clambering over themselves this summer.  The singularity at the centre of it all came on the opening night when Ireland’s Rocha Littlejohn appeared to refuse to shake hands with Australia’s Caitlin Ford, amid rumours that Ford is now dating Littlejohn’s former partner, and international team mate, Katie McCabe.  It was lesbian drama at its finest.

Need more details on what the hell is going on here?  See this useful breakdown of all the Women’s World Cup Drama (don’t blame us for the TikTok hole you’ll inevitably fall into with this)

Not one for the dyke drama?  How about going as the first non-binary player Quinn instead, or pick from a whole host of other players as this world cup broke the record for the most openly LGBTQ stars.

  8. Furry Hackers

A group of individuals wearing fursuits whilst tightly packed into a stairway. We can see furry dogs, furry wolves, furry cats, furry tigers and other types of fursuits.

In June the SiegedSec group claimed responsibility for a series of hacks targeting US government computer systems.  The self proclaimed gay furry hackers said they leaked the hacked material due to legislative attacks on gender-affirming care.

You may already have a fursuit in which case you’re ready to roll but if you’re in need of more of a DIY approach grab yourself that staple of the last minute halloween costume, some animal ears, and add props such as a laptop or your own homemade protest banner.

  9. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

Three members of The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence dressed in full nun outfits and drag makeup

This is the perfect outfit for those will they, won’t they, flakey queens.  Are they coming?  Are they not?  Who knows.

With some simple makeup, glitter and accessories you can pay tribute to the iconic Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence with a nun-inspired outfit, using your humour and wit to “expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit”.  What’s more night of the living dead than that?

This costume celebrates the spirit of activism, acceptance, and love that the Sisters embody, reminding us of the importance of community and support within the LGBTQ+ family.

Bonus couples outfit idea: that classic combination of a nun and a baseball player (any genders of your choice)

  10. Your favourite queer reality star

A compilation of stars from reality TV series Queer Ultimatum and I Kissed a Boy

May 2023 was the month the queers took claim over reality TV dating shows.  For the queer women it was all about Netflix’s The Ultimatum: Queer Love (or Queer Ultimatum as it became known to fans), whilst over on BBC Three the gays were obsessing over I Kissed a Boy (and we all know why 🚿👀).

Some simple household props will have you covered here - grab an iron & your backpack and you have an instant Aussie costume.  Or if you want to really get into ultimatum character check out Lilly Brown and co’s pizza parody for some inspiration.

If I Kissed a Boy is more your style then look no further than leather daddy and instant gay icon Ollie King's outfits throughout the show or take inspiration from the runway with Gareth and Subomi’s fashion catwalk
